Is 80ms Ping Bad for Gaming?

Simple guide to understanding your network's impact on gameplay.

80ms ping is generally considered mediocre. It is not 'bad' enough to be unplayable, but it is high enough to give low-ping opponents a clear advantage in competitive FPS titles.

Gaming Impact

At 80ms, you are at the edge of the human perception threshold. You will start to feel that the game isn't quite as 'crisp' as it could be. While you can still hit shots and win matches, your timing must be slightly more predictive rather than reactive.

Competitive vs Casual

Competitive: For 'sweaty' ranked lobbies, 80ms is pushing the limit of what is acceptable. You may notice hit-registration delays.

Casual: Unlikely to matter for most players. You can play Battle Royales or larger scale shooters like Battlefield comfortably at 80ms.

What Players Experience

Players at 80ms usually have a smooth experience, but with occasional 'ghost' shots where an enemy seems to die slightly later than you expected. As long as your jitter is low, 80ms is very consistent.

How to Improve Ping

  • Check if your ISP is using a saturated copper line; upgrading to fiber can easily drop this to 20ms.
  • Optimizing your internal network with a modern gaming router can shave off 5-10ms of internal delay.
